Paint is only as good as the prep

The paint is maybe 20% of what makes an exterior job last — the other 80% is prep: scraping, patching, caulking, priming, and cleaning so paint bonds instead of sitting on dirt. Most companies rush prep because it’s invisible under the finish coat. Ryan does the opposite, and he does every exterior paint job himself — one standard, no shortcuts hidden under a coat of paint.

What we paint

  • House exteriors — stucco, wood siding, trim, fascia, soffits, eaves, windows, and doors, single- or two-story, across Altadena, Pasadena, and the San Gabriel Valley
  • Fences — cedar, redwood, and pine, with solid, semi-transparent, or clear stain matched to the wood
  • Decks & pergolas — penetrating stains that soak into the grain instead of peeling
  • Trim, shutters & accents — a cost-effective refresh without a full repaint
  • Garage & exterior doors — sanded, primed, and finished for a smooth, durable result

Why prep matters more than paint

Loose paint hand-scraped and sanded to a solid base; stucco cracks patched and every gap caulked (paint is a finish coat, not a sealant); the right primer matched to the topcoat on bare and patched areas; and a power-wash with dry time so paint bonds clean.

Paint selection

Premium paints from Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore, and Dunn-Edwards, chosen by surface (elastomeric for stucco, acrylic latex for wood, DTM for metal), exposure, and sheen. You pick the color; Ryan advises on the product and sheen that lasts longest in Altadena’s sun.

Exterior painting in Altadena’s climate

The San Gabriel Valley gets intense sun on south and west exposures and near-freezing winter nights. Ryan times application to follow the shade — paint applied in direct sun or extreme heat doesn’t cure and fails early.

Common questions

How much does exterior painting cost in Altadena?
A typical single-story home costs $4,000–$7,000. Two-story homes range from $7,000–$12,000. Exact pricing depends on square footage, surface condition, prep work needed, and paint quality. Ryan provides a detailed estimate after seeing your property.
How long does exterior paint last in Altadena's climate?
With proper prep and quality paint, exterior paint lasts 7–10 years in Altadena. Sun exposure on south and west faces can shorten that. Ryan uses premium paints rated for UV resistance and recommends appropriate sheens for different surfaces.
Do you paint stucco homes?
Yes. Stucco is the most common exterior surface in Altadena. Ryan patches cracks, fills imperfections, and applies elastomeric or acrylic paint formulated for stucco. Proper stucco prep is critical — paint over cracks just means peeling paint over cracks.
How long does exterior painting take?
A single-story home typically takes 4–7 days including prep. Two-story homes take 7–10 days. Heavy prep work (scraping, patching, caulking) adds time but is never skipped — prep is what makes paint last.
Do you also stain fences and decks?
Yes. Ryan stains and seals wood fences, decks, pergolas, and other outdoor structures. He uses penetrating stains for wood that needs to breathe and film-forming stains where maximum protection is needed.
